With or Without a Tormek Machine

You don't need a Tormek sharpener to benefit from this system. Use the BGM-100 standalone on your bench grinder to achieve precise shapes and angles. If you later add a Tormek to your workshop, your existing jigs carry straight over — no additional investment needed.

For existing Tormek users, the workflow is simple: use the bench grinder with BGM-100 for rapid rough shaping, then move to your Tormek — without changing jig settings — for the final sharpen and hone.

Choosing the Right Grinding Disc

Not all grinding discs are suitable for precision edge tool grinding. Using the wrong disc leads to clogging, overheating, and poor results.

• Use an aluminium oxide disc with the correct bonding — not too hard (causes burning), not too soft (causes grooves)
• Keep the wheel fresh and clean using a grinding disc dresser as recommended by your machine manufacturer
• Avoid standard discs that clog easily and lose sharpening ability

The Effect of Heat on HSS Steel

HSS steel tolerates higher temperatures than carbon steel, but the thin apex of the cutting edge is still vulnerable to overheating.

• Grind carefully at the tip — stop before the edge turns blue
• Overheating can reduce hardness by up to 4 HRC (Rockwell), significantly shortening edge retention
• If cooling in water, avoid abrupt cooling from high temperatures — this can cause invisible microcracks in the edge

Dealing with Grinding Dust

Fine dust from the grinding disc and steel particles can be hazardous to health. Always use a dedicated dust extractor — do not share extraction with your woodworking machines, as sparks could ignite fine wood dust.
