Pen Turning Course - Full Day
10:00 to 16:00 including 1/2 hour break
What to expect
After a welcome drink and a safety briefing your tutor will outline the process to turn a pen from start to finish and help you select a pen blank from a range of wood or acrylic.
We use the widely recognised teaching process of "Tell, Show, Do" where your tutor will make a pen alongside yours to actively demonstrate the process and correct techniques.
By the end of the day you will come away with at least two completed pens along with the knowledge and skills required to make a pen in your own workshop.
Our courses are limited to a maximum of three students at any one time to ensure that your tutor has plenty of time to spend with each student.

I recently attended the woodturning bowl course, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience. As someone with no prior experience of bowl turning, the course exceeded all my expectations.
From the start, Ian was incredibly welcoming and patient. He explained every step clearly, from safety, tool selection and technique, and finishing techniques. The hands-on guidance made all the difference—I never felt rushed or overwhelmed, even when learning to use unfamiliar tools.
The workshop was well-equipped and organized, with everything needed provided. I got to make my own wooden bowl from scratch, and was amazed at how professional mine turned out by the end of the day. The sense of accomplishment was huge!
What stood out most was the relaxed, encouraging atmosphere. Mistakes were treated as learning opportunities, and no question was too small.
If you’ve ever been curious about woodturning, I can’t recommend this course highly enough. It’s a great way to get started, and you’ll walk away with a beautiful handmade bowl and the confidence to keep turning. I shall certainly be doing some of the other courses Ian offers!
