Description
Crushed Whitby Jet - Ring Inlay (1g)
Crushed Whitby jet is a rare natural inlay material for rings and small projects. Whitby jet is the fossilised wood of the Araucaria tree, approximately 180 million years old, and is found only in a small area along the North East coast near Whitby. We have obtained a small quantity, crushed to a very fine powder with some larger pieces, and sold in 1g packs.
Specification
- Material: crushed Whitby jet
- Origin: North East coast, near Whitby
- Form: very fine powder with some larger pieces
- Pack size: 1g
- Code: crushed-Whitby-jet
Using jet as an inlay
Mask the edges of the ring core with protection tape, fill the channel with the crushed jet and set it with thin CA glue, building up in layers. Once cured, sand back level and polish. The fine powder packs tightly, while the larger pieces add depth.
Why Whitby jet
Jet has a deep black colour and takes a high polish. Its local history and age make it a meaningful material for commission pieces and gifts with a Yorkshire connection.
