Chacate Preto - Exotic Wood Pen Blank

Chacate Preto pen blank

A Chacate Preto pen blank for pen turning on the lathe. Chacate Preto is also known as Black Chacate and False Mopane. It comes from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Similar in density to Leadwood but not as hard, Chacate Preto shares a similar grain but has a very different colour, with a warm grey to dark grey colour variation. It works well and finishes nicely.

Using a wood pen blank

Check the tube length and drill size of your pen kit before you start. Cut the blank to the length of the tubes, drill it, glue in the tubes, square the ends and turn the blank between bushings on a pen mandrel. Sand and finish to suit; CA glue, wax and lacquer are all popular finishes for wooden pens.

Natural timber

Wood is a natural material, so colour, grain and markings vary from piece to piece. The blank you receive will not look exactly like the photo, and that individual character is part of the appeal of every turned piece.
