About Umbilo

Umbilo is a timber popular in South Africa for furniture making and turning, and one of the softest African timbers. The heartwood is a rich warm to dark brown, sometimes with red streaks, with a medium even texture.

With strong grain lines similar to olive but lighter in colour, it has a waxy texture that cuts to a shine, especially on spindle work. It is a very stable timber.

• Also known as: Mukwa and Kiaat

Using a wood pen blank

Check the tube length and drill size of your pen kit before you start. Cut the blank to the length of the tubes, drill it, glue in the tubes, square the ends and turn the blank between bushings on a pen mandrel. Sand and finish to suit; CA glue, wax and lacquer are all popular finishes for wooden pens.

Natural timber

Wood is a natural material, so colour, grain and markings vary from piece to piece. The blank you receive will not look exactly like the photo, and that individual character is part of the appeal of every turned piece.
