This Record Power 1/2" morticer chisel and bit is a precision manufactured high speed steel hollow square mortice chisel, with its matching auger bit. It is suitable for use with the full range of Record Power morticers, as well as most other machines.

How a hollow chisel mortiser works
The auger bit runs inside the hollow square chisel and bores out most of the waste, while the sharpened corners of the chisel square up the hole as it is pressed down. Overlapping cuts then give a clean, square-sided mortice for a mortice and tenon joint.
Choosing a size
As a general rule, the mortice width is often around a third of the thickness of the timber being joined. A 1/2" chisel cuts a 1/2" wide mortice, and wider mortices can be cut with overlapping passes.
