About HSS twist drills
HSS twist drill bits are a good general-purpose choice for drilling wood, acrylic and resin pen blanks. Keep the bit sharp, and withdraw it regularly to clear the waste from the flutes.
Drilling a pen blank
- Check the drill size in your pen kit instructions, as tube diameters vary between kits.
- Hold the blank securely in a pen blank drilling vice or a chuck on the lathe, so the hole runs straight down the centre.
- Drill a little deeper than the tube length, glue the tube in place, then square the ends before turning.
